The City of Phoenix

Located along the banks of the Salt River, where early Hohokam Indians first settled, Phoenix, the state's capital, is saddled between dramatic mountain ranges to the north, south and east. Anchored by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Greater Phoenix is comprised of 2.5 million residents living in 22 incorporated cities-including Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa-that cover the 9,127 square miles of Maricopa County. Year-round sunshine and mild temperatures make Phoenix America's premier desert city.
Located 1,117 feet above sea level, Phoenix
weather is warm, sunny and usually dry. The yearly average temperature is a pleasant 72
degrees. Low humidity makes summer heat more comfortable than in other hot climates.
Phoenix averages sunshine during 86 percent of daylight hours and has 300 sunny days each
year. Travelers should bring casual clothes and light sweaters and jackets November
through March.
A variety of museums offer indigenous history and art, as well as imported works. The
Heard Museum of Anthropology and Primitive Art is well known for its Native American art
exhibits, including the nation's largest kachina doll collection. The Phoenix Art Museum,
host of the Cowboy Artists Show, has a permanent collection of more than 10,000 paintings,
sculptures, costumes and other works of art from the 15th through 20th centuries.
Arizona Center The Arizona Center, an
eight-block mixed-use development, features more than 60 restaurants, shops, nightclubs
and
entertainment venues, along with two-high rise office buildings surrounded
by a lush garden setting. Additionally, a 24-screen movie theater complex opened at the
Arizona Center in 1998.
Heritage Square Located at Adams and Sixth
streets, the Heritage Square was expanded in the late 1980s to include the renovation of
the Baird Machine Shop and the Rosson House into an upscale eatery, bakery and
delicatessen. Recently, Heritage Square underwent another major expansion and now houses
the Arizona Science Center and the Phoenix Museum of History.
Other interesting and informative museums are the Arizona Science Center, the Phoenix
Museum of History, the Hall of Flame Fire Fighting Museum, Scottsdale Center for the Arts
and the Champlin Fighter Aircraft Museum.
With more than 20 theater groups in Greater Phoenix, there is no shortage of
entertainment. Phoenix offers everything from Broadway plays to lyric opera. The Herberger
Theater Center plays host to many fine performances, including Ballet Arizona, the Arizona
Opera Company and the Arizona Theatre Company. The Phoenix Theatre, founded in 1920, is
the nation's longest continuously-running community theater.
The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra has been performing for more than 35 years with a season
that runs from fall through spring. Performances are held at Symphony Hall with a special
outdoor performance series. The Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra performs at the Scottsdale
Center for the Arts.
There are many opportunities to enjoy other music as well, including rock, jazz, country
and easy listening. Some of the nation's best-known artists appear at America West Arena,
Bank One Ballpark, the outdoor Blockbuster Desert Sky Pavilion, Grady Gammage Memorial
Auditorium, Red River Music Hall, The Sundome, and at many area nightclubs.
Phoenix has garnered well-earned praise as one of the world's top five golf destinations.
As the sixth-largest city in the United States, with nearly 1.3 million residents, Phoenix
offers a multitude of cultural and recreational activities.

Greater Phoenix has added more golf courses than any place in the United States over the past six years. Since 1992, 585 holes have been added to the local golf inventory with 522 more in the planning stage or under construction. Arizona has more golf courses per capita than any state west of the Mississippi River.
Greater Phoenix gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy countless activities ranging from outstanding museums, galleries, performing arts, fine dining, horseback riding and cowboy shoot-outs. The climate makes outdoor activities, such as desert jeep tours, hot-air ballooning, and water recreation a way of life.
And we haven't even discussed day trips to scenic Arizona destinations like the Grand Canyon and Sedona.
Phoenix is one of only a few cities
that has a full compliment of all four major sports. The Valley of the Sun is home to the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association,
Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League,
Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball
and the Arizona Cardinals of the National
Football League. The Greater Phoenix region also hosts annual major sporting events by the
PGA & LPGA (Men's and Womens Professional Golf), and NASCAR and the Indy Car Series
for racing enthusiasts.
Greater Phoenix and Arizona offer residents a wide range of educational opportunities. The
Maricopa Community College System is the largest
community college system in the country and offers educational opportunities for all
interests. The Valley is also home to Arizona State
University which is known for it's business and engineering programs. The University of Arizona, with its world-renowned medical
center, business and engineering schools and Northern
Arizona University, known for its nursing, engineering and physical therapy programs
are located within two hours of Greater Phoenix.
The Phoenix metropolitan is also home to many private educational
institutions as well as a number of private educational schools including:
